Certified Membership

The requirements for certified membership include:
1) Submit an email with your resume or CV requesting certified membership candidacy. Once approved, the Institute will discuss with you the details of the following steps. Approval requires a PhD in physics and to be active in the field.
2) Successfully complete the about 2 semester long course on "The Science Before Science" working with an IAP faculty on a time schedule set by the four or five other candidates, yourself, and your faculty mentor. All course work is done by phone and internet. The course meets approximately once per week for about 1 to 2 hours. The certified member course will be oriented more towards detailed physics and will be longer than the associate member course.

For assignments for IAP faculty taught course click here.

After completion of course, there will be a final exam on the material. Successful completion of a course final exam will result in certification.

3) You may find ICU's course helpful in this. Their contact and order information is as follows:
INTERNATIONAL CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY
P.O. Box 495
Notre Dame, IN 46556-0495.
If you use email, PLEASE remember to include your own email address. Some email programs fail to provide this information automatically.
ICU charges a minimal fee for the course, $60. This includes a 9-10 hour series of lectures on Video tape. Please specify Audio or Video format. The book needs to be purchased separately. Note also that the credit received can be applied towards ICU's degree program; see the ICU web site.
Phone orders with Visa/MasterCard (800) 771-7346. (Please do not email your credit card number!)

What happens when I become a certified member?

Most importantly, it means you have an understanding of key issues that have led our culture astray for 400 years and, what's more, you know the solution and are now, as a member, part of fixing and inculturating that solution. Becoming a certified member represents an accomplishment that few currently reach.

You will be now be able to participate in on-going curriculum development and research, including receiving cutting edge information at our conferences.

Your information will be archived at the Institute and you will be officially added to the certified members list. This means you will begin to receive email installments of Institute Newsletter, and entitles you to access the email list of other certified members and associate members, thus putting you in the center of activity of thinking about science and the faith. Becoming a certified member also is required for faculty members and other significant posts.

Members may also help in our various educational programs such as our graduate internship program, which is for those with an appropriate science background equivalent to B.S. degree in science, mathematics or engineering. Other internship programs are under development for those with non-science backgrounds but who nonetheless wish to learn more about the rich and fascinating fields of science and philosophy.

Certified members can advance the mission of the Institute in many different ways, including writing articles, contributing to educational materials and research, contributing to advancing modern physics, grading homework, and speaking at and attending our national conferences, including invitation only conferences.

Associate Membership (Standard)

The requirements for associate membership, which typically requires some science background, are:

Level I

1) Submit an email with your resume or CV requesting associate membership candidacy. Typically, approval requires at least a Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university, usually in science but in exceptional cases with some level of science concentration. Potential candidates typically should have completed the book The Science Before Science.
2) Successfully complete the formal course centered on the Science Before Science (typically Level I will be a shorter course than Level II) and complete a final oral exam--typically a couple of approximately 4 hour oral reviews of the key principles of the book with an IAP faculty member either in person or by phone-- (special class will substitute written exam). Candidates commit to taking an active part in explaining and generally advancing the IAP mission by becoming part of our various outreaches. Becoming involved is essential in learning the material (it's by living and teaching the principles that we really learn them). All course work is done by phone and internet. The course meets approximately once per week for about 1 to 2 hours. Class schedule is decided by the lead faculty member and the candidates.

Level II

--This is typically the highest non-physics level; it is especially for PhD non-physicists or others with very advanced backgrounds.
--Requirements are the same as Level I, except for the background requirements, the level of the final exam, and rigor and length of the course.
--Requires approximately year long course, including passing a final exam. All course work is done by phone and internet. The course meets approximately once per week for about 1 to 2 hours. Class schedule is decided by the lead faculty member and the candidates. This allows us to accommodate the schedules of our candidates, who are already-established, busy professionals.
--Candidate commits to becoming involved in advancing IAP's mission, especially educational outreach.

Associate Humanities Membership

The requirements for Associate Humanities Member are:
1) Submit an email with your resume or CV requesting associate humanities membership candidacy. Approval requires at least a Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university in a reputable humanities subject. Members should have an interest in science. Recommendation by a current IAP member is required for this class of membership. Upon your request for candidacy, if conditional approval is given, you will be assigned a member to work with in this regard. Potential candidates typically should have completed the book The Science Before Science.
2) Successfully complete the formal course centered on the Science Before Science and complete a final oral exam--typically a couple of approximately 4 hour oral reviews of the key principles of the book with an IAP faculty member either in person or by phone-- (special class will substitute written exam).
Volunteer Members
1) Submit an email with your resume or CV requesting Volunteer Membership. Typically, a college level educational background and some job experience are necessary.
2) There must be evidence that the candidate intends to learn and advance the core mission of the IAP. Typically, this is satisfied by some substantial activity in that regard and a commitment to do so. A commitment to study the Science Before Science: A Guide Thinking in the 21st Century and the Kid's Introduction to Physics (and Beyond), typically in a study group, is required.
Intern Members
(summer internship program)
High School Interns
Chosen by local physics teachers, approved by IAP faculty, as top students.
Graduate Student Interns
Must be physics graduate students approved by faculty. On years the program is offered CV's will be requested.
